Most people take the fast A7 motorway from Agadir to Marrakech (2.5 hours, toll road). But if you have time, the mountain route via Tizi n’Test pass (2,092 m) is one of the most breathtaking drives on the African continent.

Leave Agadir early and head north-east via Taroudant. The road climbs steadily through argan tree forests and Berber villages. After Oulad Berhil, the road narrows as it begins the serious ascent toward the pass. Allow three to four hours from Agadir to the summit.

At the top, pull over at the viewpoint for panoramic views of the High Atlas stretching in every direction. On a clear day you can see 100 kilometres. The descent toward Ijoukak is equally dramatic — tight hairpin bends and sheer drops demand full concentration.

Stop at the Tin Mal Mosque (12th century) in the valley below — one of the few Almohad mosques open to non-Muslims, and a UNESCO candidate site. The nearby village of Ijoukak has a small café for mint tea and tagine.

The total distance is around 270 km and takes 4–5 hours driving, longer with stops. You arrive in Marrakech via the southern Medina gate — a dramatic entrance. The return via the motorway takes only 2.5 hours.

Generation Cars recommends a standard car or SUV for this route. The road is paved throughout but very narrow in places. Available from €23/day with unlimited km.
