The 170 km coastal drive from Agadir to Essaouira is one of Morocco’s finest road trips. The route hugs the Atlantic, passing through argan forests, small fishing villages, and wild beaches with crashing surf.

Leave Agadir on the N1 heading north through Taghazout and Tamraght. The surf scene here is worth a quick stop. Continue through Aourir (Banana Village) where roadside stalls sell fresh bananas and avocados.

The road moves inland slightly after Aourir, passing through Smimou — a quiet market town at the heart of argan country. Stop at a local women’s cooperative to see argan oil being pressed by hand and buy some to take home.

After Smimou the landscape opens into sweeping views of Cap Sim. The final approach to Essaouira along the coast road is spectacular.

Essaouira itself is a UNESCO World Heritage medina — blue and white, wind-battered, and utterly charming. Spend the afternoon exploring the ramparts, the harbour, and the lively Place Moulay Hassan. The seafood grills on the harbour wall are unmissable.

Total driving time: about 2.5 hours one way. Allow a full day to enjoy both the drive and the town. Rent from Generation Cars Agadir from €23/day. Free delivery to your hotel.
